Value drivers in transactions within the specialized logistics sub-segment – a detailed analysis featuring current insights from the sale of Franz Fischer Spedition to Schenk Tanktransport, which was advised by Transfer Partners.

In this edition of the Mobility SektoReport Q1 2026, we focus on the fragmented logistics market landscape among German SMEs. In this context, specialized logistics providers and niche players are increasingly gaining importance as drivers of margins and valuations. While our previous report focused on technology-driven platform models in the CCAM sector, it is apparent that established, SME-oriented business models can also unlock significant value potential through specialization.

The current market environment is characterized by a clear tension: moderate growth drivers from e-commerce, nearshoring, and more resilient supply chains are countered by rising costs, regulatory pressure, and intense competition. In particular, the traditional general cargo freight forwarding sector faces sustained margin pressure and valuation levels of around 4.0–6.0x EV/EBITDA. In contrast, specialized logistics segments—such as hazardous goods, food, or temperature-controlled logistics—achieve structurally higher margins and median valuations of 6.0–8.0x, with higher outliers. For mid-sized companies, this implies that differentiation through expertise, certification, and service depth is becoming a key value driver.

Our Sector Insight analyzes the key logistics segments, focusing on differences in margins and valuations, and highlights the factors that are driving this trend—ranging from regulatory barriers to entry and specialized assets to long-term customer relationships. At the same time, it becomes apparent that attractive opportunities for partnerships, succession planning, and buy-and-build strategies are emerging, particularly within the fragmented SME sector.
